Prior to joining AIAA management in January 2018, Dan was a Professo
r of Engineering Practice in the School of Aeronautics and Astronautics at Purdue, where he taught courses in systems thinking, systems engineering, and space policy, focused on preparing the next generation to solve the multi-faceted challenges of the future by better integrating engineering disciplines with business, political science, communications and philosophy.
Prior to Purdue, Dumbacher spent 33 years with NASA, from summer intern to Deputy Associate Administrator for the Exploration Systems Development Division in the Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters. He was Program Director for Exploration Systems Development which included the Space Launch System, Orion and Ground Systems Development and Operations, leading a 5000+ team spanning all NASA centers and industry, responsible for a $3 billion annual budget. He has received numerous awards and honors including the Silver Snoopy Award, NASA Distinguished Service Medal and Purdue’s Gustafson Teaching Award. He has a BS in mechanical engineering from Purdue and an MBA from the University of Alabama, completed the Senior Managers in Government program at Harvard University.
