First Virtual Tech Talk a Success!

Last Thursday April 30th we had our first virtual tech talk with Dr. Bob Dougherty, the 2020 AIAA Aeroacoustics Award winner as our speaker. We had a good size audience of 40 people, not only from the Pacific Northwest, but even some die hards from the East Coast who stayed up close to midnight to listen to the presentation. As a non-expert I was able to follow along well, and learned a good bit about noise and measurement techniques for noise.

Dr. Dougherty explained the noise regulations for commercial airplanes and how this is usually measured. He then discussed what the challenges will be with urban mobility vehicles and how their different uses will require a different way of measuring noise. He explained the existing methods and their drawbacks, and concluded explaining how a sound sphere can be measured with a novel concept using acoustic cameras he came up with.

Unfortunately we were unable to record the presentation, but Dr. Dougherty generously provided a copy of his slides for download: Dougherty_AIAA_PNW_April_30_2020.
