This presentation is a collection of thoughts and a reflection on the current state of approaches to Machine Learning, Digital Thread, Optimization, and related technologies in structures at Boeing Commercial Airplanes. This is a one-person perspective on what is currently being done in practice and thoughts on how to improve the current practice.
Vladimir Balabanov
Dr. Vladimir Balabanov is a Boeing Technical Fellow. He develops, promotes and applies Optimization, Design of Experiments, Machine Learning and related technologies to make structural components most efficient and effective. He teaches classes on Optimization and Machine learning at Boeing and two Universities.
Before joining Boeing, Vladimir worked for 11 years for Vanderplaats Research and Development, Inc. (acquired by Altair in 2023) developing commercial multidisciplinary optimization and integration software system VisualDOC, used worldwide.
Currently, Vladimir works in Boeing Commercial Airplanes Structures Core group, where he organized and leads the Optimization Technical Excellence Center as well as the Enterprise Structural Optimization Community of Excellence.
Vladimir is an AIAA Deputy Director for Cross-Institute Coordination of Aerospace Design and Structures Group, comprised of 10 International Technical committees including Multidisciplinary Design Optimization Technical Committee. He is also a chair of the NAFEMS Engineering Data Science Working Group.
